The Story Behind the British Museum Scarf

A Tudor love story, reimagined in silk

Join Kathy Kyle Studio for Surrey Artists Open Studios 2026. Step inside Kathy Kyle's studio at 5 West Street, Dorking. From 15–21 June, 11am–5pm daily, Kathy will be welcoming visitors every Thursday and Sunday to share not just her work, but the remarkable story behind her latest projects.

At the heart of a historic commission

The Tudor Heart Pendant

One of the most extraordinary jewels of the Tudor age, the Tudor Heart is a rare, enamelled pendant crafted from 24-carat gold, associated with Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. The original features a Tudor rose entwined with Catherine's pomegranate emblem, alongside the initials "H" and "K" — symbolising the royal couple. It is unlike any other object in the British Museum collection, or anywhere else in the UK. It is currently on display in Room 2: Collecting the World.

Kathy was honoured to be commissioned by the British Museum to reimagine these historic motifs in an elegant contemporary design — translating the romance, symbolism, and craftsmanship of the pendant into a bespoke silk scarf.

"I hope you will enjoy how I've reimagined these historic motifs in an elegant contemporary design to celebrate one of the most remarkable jewels of the Tudor age."
— Kathy Kyle

The design process

Come to the studio and hear how that creative journey unfolded — from the initial research into Tudor history and the pendant's symbolism, through the development of a colour palette and intricate pattern-making, to the final, exquisite result. Kathy will be on hand to walk visitors through every stage, offering a rare glimpse into the craft and considered vision that shapes each of her designs.

The scarf will be available this summer at the British Museum Gift Shop. This autumn, Kathy's story continues on an international stage as her capsule collection debuts in Paris.
